Associate Professor Claudia Di Bella is an academic orthopaedic surgeon based in Melbourne, specialising in orthopaedic oncology and complex joint reconstruction. Originally trained at the world-renowned Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute (Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli) in Bologna, Italy, she moved to Australia in 2010 and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2013.
She is Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Melbourne and leads a translational research program focused on tissue engineering and innovative solutions to improve outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal disease, in particular bone sarcomas. Her research has attracted over AUD $6 million in competitive funding, including an NHMRC–MRFF Clinical Investigator Grant, and has resulted in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and numerous national and international presentations. She is passionate about bridging the gap between scientific discovery and meaningful improvements in patient care.
Clinically, A/Prof Di Bella is one of Australia’s few orthopaedic oncology surgeons, managing complex bone and soft tissue tumours and performing high-volume limb salvage surgery and joint reconstruction. Her work combines surgical expertise, innovation and multidisciplinary care for patients facing life-changing diagnoses.
Beyond her clinical and academic roles, Claudia is a strong advocate for diversity, inclusion and representation in medicine. Through national and international leadership roles, including within orthopaedic surgery and sarcoma organisations, she actively mentors the next generation of surgeons and researchers, with a particular commitment to supporting women and underrepresented groups in STEMM and surgical careers.

Sovereign capability uplifted
Skilled labour, in particular skilled in the manufacture of MTP products, namely competency in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), was identified as one of the key priorities, according to Jarrod Belcher, Director of the REDI Program at MTPConnect. Through a competitive process, MTPConnect selected additional industry training providers to deliver new programs addressing key skills gaps in the sector workforce.
Launched in September 2022, one of these programs is GMP Uplift developed by the Centre for Biopharmaceutical Excellence (CBE). CBE bring experience across large and small Biologics, Pharmaceuticals and Regenerative Medicine companies, both in consulting and GMP related enterprise training. CBE staff also have extensive experience in GMP operations, compliance, auditing and QMS design, a wide industry network for guest lecturers and readily available case studies.

National Cancer Plan activates Australian Comprehensive Cancer Network
The landscape of cancer care in Australia is set to transform with the Australian Government launch in May 2024 of the Australian Comprehensive Cancer Network (ACCN) at the Innovations Showcase event, hosted by Cancer Australia in Sydney, Australia.
The ACCN is a nationally integrated system of cancer care, aimed at enhancing patient experiences and outcomes through coordinated and equitable access, by linking to comprehensive cancer services across Australia. Anchored by Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs), the ACCN strives to deliver evidence-driven prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support to all Australians affected by cancer.

Addressing Wound Management
The cost of chronic wounds in Australia is estimated to be $3 Billion per year, impacting 420,000 Australians. Not only is this a national economic concern, but more importantly, is the suffering the person may be going through.
Australian Health Journal met with Hayley Ryan, Board Director and Chair at Wounds Australia and Director at WoundRescue to hear her work in chronic wound management, palliative wounds and pressure injury prevention to comfort those living with a wound.
